From Patty Flauto ~

Working in the studio offers a certain stillness that is inspiring to me. It is one of the few places where I can allow myself the time stop and think and to create without purpose or practicality.

Color has always been my passion. From the very beginning of my creative experience I have been drawn to color. I use color as point of departure for all of my work, often starting with nothing else in mind but a group of colors or an unusual combination. I enjoy the mystery of what may or may not happen when the right or wrong color is added to the piece. Even with plenty of practical knowledge and training on color theory and color properties, the only thing I’m sure about is its unpredictability.

My work is experimental—using watercolor, oil pastel, acrylic ink, graphite and textured paste to create “in the moment” responding to the way each different media reacts and creates opportunities that arise for me throughout the entire process. Opportunities created by the media challenge me as they are combined with my awareness of composition, color and subject, hopefully coming together in a successful finish.

Imagery draws from a variety of sources, mostly found in my imagination but somehow related to memories, experiences, and emotions. These varied sources combine and eventually unfold into a narrative style of painting that acts to illustrate my personal approach to life and everything that touches me.
